Thank you so much for reading our letter. We see adoption as an incredible gift, and we know it’s a big decision. We hope this gives you a sense of who we are and the kind of parents we’d be. Adoption has always been a part of our lives and we’re excited to create our family this way. If Mel’s great grandfather were not adopted, she wouldn’t be here today! Among our family and friends, some have adopted kids or were themselves adopted. We’ve been together for almost 20 years and married for the past 12. By heritage, Scott is German & Irish, and Mel is Chinese and fluent in Cantonese. We live in a safe, diverse community with lots of families, good schools, and open space. Scott owns a bike shop just blocks from our home, and Mel is a marketing director. We offer a family-centered routine; value education and life experience; and are committed to creating a home where our child develops a strong sense of self, is compassionate, open-minded and dedicated. We promise you that, with us, your child will grow up in a safe, happy home with lots of love, stability and support.

About Us

We laugh about our first date—it was kind of a fiasco! At dinner, our food took so long to arrive that we missed the movie we had planned. So we tried to see a band, but that didn't work out. Then, we got stuck in traffic for three hours. Let’s just say, we had a lot of time to get to know each other. Our second date was MUCH better (there was only room to go up), and the rest is history!

We enjoy museums, live music, and exploring, whether it’s biking, checking out a vintage shop, or walking around a neighborhood. On Sundays, we always make a nice dinner—a new recipe or a dish that takes more time—like roasted chicken or enchiladas. We’re excited to share our lives with our child in these everyday ways.

We also like doing things on our own. Scott goes downhill mountain biking, and Mel definitely doesn’t. Mel jogs, or will host a Patrick Swayze movie-thon (these are of absolutely no interest to Scott). Still, we get excited about spending time together—we’ve been married for 12 years and together for 20 years! We’re ready to be parents, to give our love to a child and help him/her grow up.

We’re easy-going (and particular in our own ways), like to laugh (we watch Comedy Central almost every night), and like being on the go (but can be couch potatoes). We’re silly and like to joke. Instead of “honey” and “dear”, we say, “hello, my little squab” or “hey, pork fried rice.”

We’re very close to our families, with siblings on both sides and an extended family with lots of cousins, uncles and aunties. We take our careers and relationships seriously, and always want to be true to ourselves and to others. We’ll raise our child in the same way.

 

Adoption feels right for us

After years of trying to conceive, we concluded that our desire to be parents outweighed the desire for our own biological child; we feel that family can come from anywhere.

Mel’s great grandfather was adopted, as is one of her aunts. Scott’s cousin is adopted. We also have several friends who have adopted one or more kids. So we’ve been exposed to adoption in our lives and are excited to build our family this way.

We’d love to add a third pea to our pod of two! Really it’s a pod filled with many more, given our close-knit family and friends who’d be a part of our child’s life. Key to parenting for us is spending time with our child, sharing in traditions, and helping him/her grow up to be a good person. Education is important to us, and so is having fun. He/she will receive so much love.

Safe, family-oriented neighborhood

Our home is in San Francisco near the beach and Golden Gate Park. We have a library and parks with swings and jungle gyms two blocks away. Kids often play or ride their bikes and razors around. There are 3-4 schools in walking distance. They’re the safest in the city and recognized for academic excellence. We have a big backyard for BBQs and birthday parties.

Things we look forward to doing with our child:

• Eating together every day at our family table

• Helping with homework

• Teaching him/her how to ride a bike

• Going to the beach near our house

• Making Christmas cookies

• Cuddling up to read a book

About Mel - by Scott

Mel (short for Melinda) is incredibly caring for other people and has a big heart. Very open-minded about new adventures and experiences. I love seeing her get excited about something new whether it’s music, touring on a bike, cooking—it’s contagious.

She will make such a great mom—she’s so naturally nurturing and committed to making a good home for our child. She’s looking forward to not just the big occasions—activities for Christmas, costumes for Halloween, church on Easter Sunday, but also the everyday activities—making our baby’s food, giving him/her a bath, and soothing him/her to sleep.

Tidbits on Mel:

• Grew up in the Bay Area in California

• Honest, caring, analytical, patient, easy-going

• Loves trying new foods and combing stationery stores

• Favorite animals: dachshunds, corgis—any dog with a long body and short legs; also, panda bears and elephants

• Famous for her brownies and oatmeal-raisin cookies

• Grew up feeding ducks at the lake with her dad, going to Fentons, and watching horror movies (but is now too scared to watch them)

• Her family is her #1 priority

 

About Scott - By Mel

Scott is one of the kindest, most genuine people I know. He’s generous, playful, and incredibly loyal to his friends and family. He’s one of those people that makes effort to stay in touch with people when day-to-day life keeps everyone on busy schedules. Scott reminds me to have fun, keep things in perspective, and express myself when something’s on my mind. He’s funny and makes me laugh a lot.

Scott is such the guiding type, and looks forward to teaching our child how to ride a bike, play soccer, and go tide pooling in Half Moon Bay. There will surely be days spent watching trains go by and outings to Tilden Park to ride the miniature railway!

Tidbits on Scott:
