We met online more than 6 years ago while Rick was serving as a Physician in the U.S. Army.  Katherine grew up in Australia and can’t wait to share her Australian heritage.  We have been unable to have children and, having adopted children on both sides of our family, know that creating our family through adoption was meant to be. 

We have been happily married for 5 years now dreaming of sharing our happy, active, laughter-filled lives with a child.  We own a beautiful home in San Francisco with a big back yard right next door to a national park.  Together, we will raise your baby to be happy, healthy and loved. Katherine has a flexible work schedule and Rick will be an amazing part time stay at home Dad!

My wife can light up a room with a smile. She is organized, energetic, loyal and loving, driven as if by an inner beautiful light. Katherine treats other people with a great deal of respect and as a result she has many strong and lasting friendships and has been successful in her career as a business consultant. She has traveled the world (as I have) and has a true appreciation of other cultures and traditions.

Katherine was raised on a farm in Australia and had lots of pets she cared for and loved as a child. She also pursued many fun activities including painting, dancing, basketball and playing the flute. She is very well-rounded and, as the daughter of a teacher, will naturally teach and pass on the many wonderful opportunities and experiences she has had to our child.

Katherine will be a wonderful Mom. I can imagine her cuddling with our child in my grandmother’s rocking chair, reading bedtime stories, making yummy baby food, walking the trails of the nearby national park with our child in a stroller, or arranging playdates with children of our close friends, who were also adopted. Katherine engages with everyone, cares deeply and always lends a hand. Our child will be loved, and will learn to love with a really, really big heart.

Katherine makes our family life fun and memorable. She is a creative cook and makes something different, healthy and delicious for dinner almost every day. She plans our holiday celebrations in great detail, finding ways to make everyone feel included and cared for, whether that be making my Dad’s favorite mashed potatoes, playing monopoly with my Mom or finding the perfect gift for our nephew.  She loves to create scrapbooks of photos and mementos to share with family and friends

Katherine makes our family home cozy and comfortable. From the day I met her in person upon my return from Iraq, she has always made me feel so at home, so loved, and as though I can accomplish anything. I know she will do the same with our child.

About Rick (by Katherine)

Rick is the most kind and generous man I have ever met. He goes out of his way to make the people around him feel loved and cared for. My Mom thinks he is the best thing since sliced bread. He writes romantic poems for me and makes me a cup of tea first thing every morning. He paid for his sisters to go to college. He goes to his grandmother’s doctors’ appointments with her. The list of remarkable things Rick does for others is endless and amazing.

Rick will be an awesome Dad. He writes, paints and is very creative. I can just picture him helping our child to draw and, in a few years, teaching him/her to play tennis. Rick’s college studies in law, architecture and medicine make him knowledgeable about a wide variety of topics and he will help our child get an incredible education. I have watched Rick patiently help his nephew with his homework and know he can’t wait to do that with our child.

Rick obtained a scholarship, attended medical school and honorably served in the military as a Physician with deployments to Egypt, Korea and Iraq. Rick returned to San Francisco five years ago to become a civilian Physician. He became a Doctor for all the right reasons. Rick loves caring for children and is very closely connected with his nieces and nephews and invested in their upbringing. Our friends call Rick “the baby whisperer” for his ability to soothe a crying child. Rick is so sweet and affectionate and I know will be a very loving Dad.

Our Life Together Now

The Beginning

We met on an on-line dating website (eHarmony) six years ago while Rick was serving in the U.S. Army in Iraq. It was “love at first email” and we are so very grateful that we met. Once Rick was deployed back to Hawaii we dated long distance and were married in 2011 surrounded by family and friends from all over the world. We love to share time with our family and friends and their children, cook delicious meals, hike, explore the outdoors and travel the world! We love each other very much and are able to provide a child with a very loving, safe, comfortable upbringing and an excellent education. We tried to get pregnant for several years and have decided now that adoption is the best way for us to create our family. We are so excited about our decision and the future.  

Today

Rick has two medical practices and Katherine is a business consultant. We are very lucky that we have flexible jobs that will allow us time off to be great parents and are so looking forward to being at home together with our baby. We are a very affectionate couple and hold hands, kiss and cuddle often. Our child will grow up knowing how wonderful it is to be part of a healthy, loving relationship.

Our Home

We own a beautiful house in a safe and very family-friendly San Francisco, California neighborhood with great schools and healthcare. Our home has 4 bedrooms, a playroom and plenty of space for us to raise a family. We are across the road from a national park with amazing playgrounds, grassy fields, trails, community facilities and museums. We have a snuggly and talkative cat (Harry) that we rescued from the SPCA. We enjoy a variety of fun activities that will be even better as a family. We stay fit by working out, walking the trails in the National Park nearby and exploring the many beautiful places around San Francisco. We love cooking at home together and picnics in the park. We spend time with our friends and their children at their houses and ours, sharing meals and playing games.

We make a big deal of holidays and throw fun parties for birthdays, the Super Bowl, etc. On Cinco de Mayo we decorated the house with sombreros, piñatas and balloons. Katherine made Super Nachos and Rick put together a playlist of awesome Mexican music. We had a full house of friends and children running around having fun. For the World Cup, we threw a party with decorations of the flags of the countries, soccer quiz games and enjoyed food and music from those countries. At Easter, we made a delicious brunch for our friends and had an Easter egg hunt for kids in our backyard. We cannot wait to celebrate every milestone and holiday with our child. We love to go to baseball & basketball games, read and watch movies.

Our Vacations

This year we took a road trip vacation to the Oregon coast over July 4th exploring Crater Lake, the mountains and the coast. We visited Australia for New Year and try to visit there at least once every two years. We so look forward to sharing Katherine’s Australian heritage with our child. We often take family members with us on fun trips. Last year we took our Moms to Washington DC to see the National Monuments and then to New York and Philadelphia to round out the history tour! We have also taken them to Mexico where we spent time at the zoo with 19 day old baby lions (really!) and took Mexican cooking classes. We have traveled across the U.S., and in many countries, and can’t wait to show our child the world too!

Our Future as a Family

Our Future as a Family

We have adopted family members on both sides of our family and our closest friends recently adopted their child, Shane. We know it is important that our child knows he/she is adopted and loved and that we talk openly with him/her about it. Our child will benefit from knowing Shane and other adopted children. We have lots of friends with small children. We have friends who have recently had babies, friends who recently adopted and friends who are currently pregnant! We have a great support network around us that will help us raise our child. Our family and friends are very supportive and excited to welcome our child!

Katherine’s Mom is ready to be a doting grandmother and is already knitting booties and baby blankets!  Rick’s Mom can’t wait to cuddle!  Rick’s immediate family all live close by and will be an integral part of this child’s life. Rick’s immediate family live close by & will be an integral part of our child’s life. We also have family in Colorado and in Arizona.

As an Army Doctor, Rick was trained for long and sleepless nights! Katherine is very organized and a good planner. So, between the two of us, we know we will be a great team and are so looking forward to the adventure of parenthood!
